Weak near-unanimity functions and digraph homomorphism problems

چکیده
For a fixed digraphH, the problem of deciding whether there exists a homomorphism from an input digraph G to H is known as the H-colouring problem. An algebraic approach to this problem was pioneered by Jeavons et. al. in the context of the more general constraint satisfaction problem. Results by Larose and Zádori and by Maróti and McKenzie allows one to interpret the algebraic approach in terms of so called weak near-unanimity functions (WNUFs). In this paper we focus on weak near-unanimity functions and how they apply to the H-colouring problem in particular. Our results range from non-existence results of WNUFs for certain digraphs H, to the existence of WNUFs for the well known polynomial cases of the H-colouring problem treated by Gutjahr, Woeginger and Welzl. Along the way we develop WNUF analogs of the indicator and sub-indicator constructions of Hell and Nešetřil. These results provide evidence to the conjecture that weak near-unanimity functions are the right measure for the complexity of the H-colouring problem.

Dichotomy for Digraph Homomorphism Problems
We consider the problem of finding a homomorphism from an input digraph G to a fixed digraph H. We show that if H admits a weak-near-unanimity polymorphism φ then deciding whether G admits a homomorphism to H (HOM(H)) is polynomial time solvable. This confirms the conjecture of Bulatov, Jeavons, and Krokhin [BJK05], in the form postulated by Maroti and McKenzie [MM08], and consequently implies ...
متن کاملRefuting Feder, Kinne and Rafiey
In January 2017, Feder, Kinne and Rafiey posted a manuscript [10] on the arXiv which purportedly gives a polynomial-time algorithm solving the digraph homomorphism problem Hom(H), assuming only that the target digraph H has a weak near unanimity (WNU) polymorphism. If correct, their algorithm would finish the proof of the CSP Dichotomy Conjecture of Feder and Vardi [6]. In my opinion, their man...
متن کاملAdjoint functors and tree duality
A family T of digraphs is a complete set of obstructions for a digraph H if for an arbitrary digraph G the existence of a homomorphism from G to H is equivalent to the non-existence of a homomorphism from any member of T to G. A digraph H is said to have tree duality if there exists a complete set of obstructions T consisting of orientations of trees. We show that if H has tree duality, then it...
متن کاملNear-Unanimity Functions and Varieties of Reflexive Graphs
Let H be a graph and k ≥ 3. A near-unanimity function of arity k is a mapping g from the k-tuples over V (H) to V (H) such that g(x1, x2, . . . , xk) is adjacent to g(x ′ 1, x ′ 2, . . . , x ′ k) whenever xix ′ i ∈ E(H) for each i = 1, 2, . . . , k, and g(x1, x2, . . . , xk) = a whenever at least k − 1 of the xi’s equal a. Feder and Vardi proved that, if a graph H admits a near-unanimity functi...
متن کاملReflexive digraphs with near unanimity polymorphisms
In this paper we prove that if a finite reflexive digraph admits Gumm operations, then it also admits a near unanimity operation. This is a generalization of similar results obtained earlier for posets and symmetric reflexive digraphs by the second author and his collaborators. In the special case of reflexive digraphs our new result confirms a conjecture of Valeriote that states that any finit...
